Guest Pick: What Is Your Favorite Beach Activity?
Soaking up the sun isn’t the only thing to do while you are enjoying a lazy day along the sandy shores in Myrtle Beach. In fact, there are plenty of fun beach activities for both the active and the passive beach-goer.
We took to Facebook and asked our fan base what their favorite beach activity was – here’s what they had to say!
What is your favorite beach activity?
“Sandcastle Contest!” – Sandy P.
What a great idea! Having a sandcastle-building contest is a great way to keep the kiddos busy or to enjoy a little friendly competition among family and friends. Most area beach stores have plenty of sandcastle building materials – buckets, shaped cups, shovels, etc. – and they are pretty affordable which means fun on a budget. And, you can get creative and incorporate other toys and decorations for a personalized touch.
“Our family always packs a few beach games.” – James W.
Beach games are an oldie but goodie and the options are endless! Sports enthusiasts typically enjoy Frisbee, soccer, football, or volleyball which the more casual gamer might enjoy options like bocce ball, ladder ball, or cornhole. What is your favorite beach game?
“We like to pack a picnic and have dinner at sunset.” – Ashlee C.
Another great tip for beach-goers on a budget, packing a beach picnic is a great way to make the most of our scenic destination. You can either opt for an easy homemade meal with sandwiches / wraps and other picnic fare or grab a meal to-go from your favorite area restaurant (pizza, anyone?) and dine al fresco along the shoreline. Just remember to pack a blanket or towel and to clean up after yourself when you are ready to head back.
“Our kids always love to participate in active play like kayaking, paddle boarding, or surfing.” – Jeff T.
It is easy for beach pros and beginners to get active and battle the salty seas. Many visitors bring their own gear but Myrtle Beach also offers plenty of local rental places where you can rent everything from paddle boards and kayaks to boats and jet skis. Take these out into the ocean for a thrilling experience or, for a tamer ride, rent from an inlet or creek area like Murrells Inlet, Cherry Grove, or Pawleys Island. The channels off the ocean offer a much more calm atmosphere and are ideal for beginners.
“We like to give the kids a beach scavenger hunt list – they love the hunt and it keeps them busy for hours!” – Candice H.
Beach scavenger hunts are easy to organize and are an easy way to entertain the masses. Popular objects might include: sea shell, shark tooth, crab or jelly fish, someone buried in sand, wet dog, flip flops, sunglasses, bird, surfboard…. The options are endless! Using a camera or phone will really make the options endless – get creative and have fun!
"Surf fishing is always a good time for our family, you never know what you are going to catch." - John S.
Grab a few poles, some bait, and scope out the perfect spot for a day of surf fishing. This method is easy for beginners and experts alike and is a great way for the adults to teach the youngsters a thing or two. Fishers can actively hold the rods while fishing or you can kick back and relax and let a rod holder do all the work. Just be sure to pick a semi-secluded location and to wait until the tide is right - high tide is the best time to catch fish while they are feeding closer to shore.
“Sea shell hunts are our favorite!” – Anna B.
Sea shells are abundant along the Grand Strand and are a fun way to pass the time while soaking up the sun. Challenge the kids to collect as many as possible and use them as a souvenir or for decorations and crafts when you return home. Other beachy collectibles include sea coral, driftwood, starfish, and sea glass.
“Our troupe likes to set up a beach-style Olympics day and get the whole family involved.” – Bruce M.
We thought this twist on beach games was a great idea! A small search for “beach Olympics” yielded tons of easy beach games that don’t take a ton of effort and that the whole family can enjoy together. Ideas for games include crab walk race, beach hurdles using coolers, buckets, and hula hoops as obstacles, discus throw using Frisbees, water balloon tossing contest in pairs, and quick rounds of other beach games mentioned above. This is an easy and cheap way to plan out an entire afternoon!
